Fall in Love with North Carolina: Top Things to Do in the Triangle & Triad This October

By Timothy Neubauer · Oct 1, 2026

There's something special about October in North Carolina. Crisp mornings replace the summer humidity, the hardwoods across the Piedmont start to turn, and towns from Raleigh to Winston-Salem fill up with fairs, farm days and evenings spent outside.

Whether you've lived here for years and want to refresh your fall list, or you're getting to know the area before a move, October is one of the best months to experience central North Carolina. Here are my picks for the Triangle and the Triad this month, with local businesses and community events worth making time for.

The Triangle

1. The N.C. State Fair, Raleigh (Oct. 15–25)

No October in the Triangle is complete without the North Carolina State Fair. For 11 days, the N.C. State Fairgrounds celebrate the state's agriculture with livestock and farm exhibits, rides on the midway, live music and plenty of classic fair food.

  • Where: N.C. State Fairgrounds, Raleigh
  • My tip: Weekdays are usually less crowded, and it's worth staying into the evening when the midway lights come on.

2. Pumpkins and hayrides at Page Farms, Raleigh

For a classic farm day close to home, Page Farms in northwest Raleigh has been family owned and operated for more than 100 years. Pick a pumpkin, find your way through the corn maze and take a hayride around the farm.

  • Where: Page Farms, 6100 Mount Herman Rd., Raleigh
  • Good to know: Admission includes the corn maze, hayride, playground, cow train and farm animals. Pumpkin season runs through Nov. 1.

3. Falling for Local at Dorothea Dix Park, Raleigh (Sat., Oct. 3)

With the downtown skyline as a backdrop, Dix Park is one of the best places in Raleigh to take in the fall color. On Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Shop Local Raleigh's Falling for Local festival fills the park with more than 150 local independent vendors, food trucks, North Carolina craft breweries, live music, hayrides and a pumpkin patch. The activities are free; you only pay for food and drinks.

The Triad

4. The Carolina Classic Fair, Winston-Salem (Oct. 2–11)

The Triad's signature fall event is the Carolina Classic Fair, North Carolina's second-largest agricultural fair. Expect livestock and agricultural exhibits, creative arts and culinary competitions, rides and games, and plenty of fair food.

5. Cider slushies at Millstone Creek Orchards, Ramseur

Tucked into Randolph County, south of the Triad, Millstone Creek Orchards makes an easy fall day trip from either region. Don't leave without an apple cider slushie and a warm apple cider donut from Granny's Goodies.

  • Where: Millstone Creek Orchards, Ramseur
  • Good to know: The donuts are baked fresh on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the fall, so plan a weekend visit.

6. Fall evenings in downtown Greensboro

Downtown Greensboro is at its best on a cool October night, with local restaurants, shops and the Downtown Greenway all close together. Kick off the month at First Friday on Oct. 2, downtown's evening celebration from 6 to 9 p.m.

Thinking about a move? Fall is a great time to explore

I often tell clients moving to the area that autumn is the perfect time to explore. Walking a downtown, stopping at a farm stand or spending an afternoon at a festival gives you a real feel for everyday life in a community.

Whether you're comparing towns in Wake County or looking at historic homes in Forsyth or Guilford County, the Triangle and the Triad have a lot to offer. My Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and Winston-Salem guides are a great place to start, and my monthly market reports show what's happening with home prices right now.
